» ye rooze khoob miad: If you're really a "proud Iranian" you:
- Don’t support a regime that systematically uses rape and sexual assault regularly in its political prisons.
- Open your eyes to the suffering of the lower classes that were promised prosperity after the revolution and have since only become poorer
- Disapprove of, if not…
Hi there, google the White Revolution in Iran. Now, consider what the White Revolution consisted of, and that the Shah was a tyrant. The absolute monarchy completely undermined it’s own reforms, and made it virtually impossible for Iran to progress socioeconomically. That along with obvious sociopolitical turmoil, pushed the Iranian populous towards the only remaining organization that was interested in defending the people’s best interest; the clergy. Now, the regime is currently as corrupt as the monarchy ever was, but in the initial stages of the revolution the clergy made a conscious effort to press educational and economic reform, simply because the success of their infant theocracy depended on it. There is a lot of evidence of the success of these reforms, but I simply don’t have the time or energy to list them all, so I’ll state the most obvious; education reform. Under the Shah, the Intelligentsia was constantly under attack, education was largely unavailable, and close to 83% of the population was illiterate. Presently, 77% of Iranians are literate and educated. Although, it is blatantly obvious that the Arts are constantly under attack, and artists like my self, must constantly endure the threat censorship, Khomieni didn’t necessarily encourage Iranians to become less educated. Khomeini also addressed issues such as overpopulation, disease, established land reform that assisted the incredibly impoverished and previously ignored working classes, and made resources such as fuel, sugar, rice, electricity, and sanitation available to the lowest classes. Not to mention, that because Iran is an Islamic Republic the concept of alms was married into the political system which provided for the under served and under-resourced. The poorer classes did not become poorer after the revolution, instead a large percentage enjoyed a degree of socioeconomic freedom that was previously unknown.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I am not some crazy religious girl who loves the regime, in fact I firmly believe that any type of social justice is ever acceptable, or that people should never be punished for simply demanding their natural rights, but I don’t think it’s acceptable to make claims that false and make the IRI seem any worse than it already is - because quite frankly it is currently horrible. Also, we’re currently living in an era where almost every super power is prepared to attack Iran. It is yours, mine, and every Iranian’s duty to prevent this by not just emphasizing only the negative or positive aspects of IRI, but the truth. And the truth, is that a regime came to power with the intent of restoring it’s country, and although it was relatively successful, failed to provide it’s people’s with adequate freedoms and in attempt to control people who are presently demanding those freedoms has become increasingly more corrupt.
So yeah.
Mibosamet,
Rausan
1. Sweetie, I know the conditions that lead to the revolution. You don’t need to school me on that and I never implied that they were fine before the revolution, and that reforms weren’t needed.
2. The cultural revolutions cut essential programs and classes in universities across Iran. My mom, an economic major, tells me all about how all her economics classes had an incredibly Marxist slant and professors were forced to never consider any other viewpoint than what the Islamic Republic considers “economically compatible with Islam.” Censorship is discouraging education. It’s insulting to the population getting censored. It’s not acceptable.
3. Khomeini encouraged overpopulation by telling Iranians to breed more Iranians. How did he address over population? It was after he died that Iranian administrators began implementing population control policies, including mandatory training before having a child, and access to birth control.
4. The few things you cite that came from the revolution that were positive (i.e. the alms) do not excuse any of the atrocities that I mention in my original post, making them no less “correct”.
5. The regime that came to power after the revolution suppressed what Iranians wanted. It was a group of religious radicals that were exploited and capitalized on the desperation of Iranian people who wanted sovereignty, made them promises that couldn’t be kept.
6. It’s my duty to speak against the injustices that occur DAILY under the regime. Iran threatening to get attacked doesn’t make the human rights issues in Iran any less pertinent.
So…. yeah. What?
I never said that the humans rights issues were unimportant or that they should be ignored/excused, in fact I stated the opposite. Instead I did try to explain why I thought two of your bullets to be incorrect. Also, although the bias in Iranian classrooms is undeniable, unfortunate, and inexcusable the fact that even a more basic education was made more commonly available is invaluable. And of course, no regime ever has self-less intentions, and I do believe that the clergy did become incredibly power hungry, but that doesn’t mean that their efforts didn’t benefit the people. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time to explain this any further, but I have written a thesis on this explaining details like Khomeini’s efforts against overpopulation, and why I believe what I believe which I would gladly make available to you.
It’s nice discussing this with you,
Rausan
